TUNNEL HILL, GA (WRCB)- The upcoming departure of a popular high school principal is making waves in Whitfield County.

Northwest Whitfield High principal Carolyn Towns is reportedly being transferred to an undetermined school by outgoing Superintendent Katie Brochu.  Ms. Towns has been principal at the high school for the past six years, following a two-year stint at the nearby middle school.

Eric Beavers, community and media specialist for the school district, e-mailed this response to Eyewitness News when asked about Ms. Towns' status: "We cannot discuss personnel matters, particularly before any recommendations are on the table before the school board. Principals are  evaluated regularly and the superintendent makes adjustments as needed
to ensure all Whitfield County Schools are meeting and exceeding the needs of our students and their families."

Beavers added, however that, "Students at Northwest Whitfield High School and all over Whitfield County Schools are achieving at unprecedented levels."  He said that Board members played no role in Ms. Towns' upcoming transfer.

He indicated that the decision was made by Superintendent Brochu, who is leaving Whitfield County at the end of the school year for a similar position in South Carolina.  There is no word on who might replace her at Northwest Whitfield High.

Ms. Towns has not responded to our request for comment.  Parents contacted by Eyewitness News indicate they plan to attend the School Board's meeting on Monday April 26 (6:30 pm in the Central Office building) to voice their support for Mrs. Towns.

A Facebook page (Keep Mrs. Towns at Northwest) has been set up by friends and supporters of Ms. Towns, at http://www.facebook.com/?sk=messages#!/group.php?gid=113577168664700&v=wall&ref=nf.
