DALTON, GA (WRCB) - The next superintendent of Whitfield County Schools already works for the school district.

The Board of Education on Monday named four finalists for the role of superintendent. They

• Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dusty Brown

• Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Judy Gilreath

• Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Danny Hayes

• Assistant Superintendent of Operations Richard Schoen

School board chairman Tim Trew said the board chose to look at internal candidates because they understand the direction of the school system. During a March 30 called school board meeting, staff members shared with board members their stories of the positive changes they've been a part of during the past five years.

Improvements made during that time include increasing the graduation rate more than 62 percent, improving student and staff attendance, and a substantial decrease in student discipline referrals.

"The board is extremely pleased that our capacity for leadership within the district has built tothe point that we were able to limit our search to internal candidates at the assistant superintendent level," Trew said. "We have four extremely talented individuals with the moral integrity and character necessary to lead the school system as superintendent."

Trew said the board members will not meet this week, but will continue reviewing the four finalists during their regular work session, which is April 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the Central Office Building on South Thornton Avenue.
