Willie Speaks Out on Horse Slaughter

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Willie Nelson submitted an opinion piece to The Tennessean criticizing Rep. Frank Niceley for a bill that would encourage horse slaughtering operations.

Both men say they love horses and are concerned about cases of horses starving.

The Strawberry Plains Republican had previously criticized the singer of "Beer for my Horses" for his promotion of a bill in Congress that would both outlaw horse slaughter in the U.S. and prohibit horses from being taken to other countries to be killed.

An article in Wednesday's The Tennessean quotes from Nelson's letter in which he claims slaughter operators outbid rescue groups at auctions, buying horses that are then shipped out of the country and killed under terrible conditions.

Niceley said he thinks Nelson is well intentioned but wrong while Nelson called Niceley's bill "a step backward."
