CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released the 2009 "Crime on Campus" Report which shows a statewide increase of crime on Tennessee's campuses for the first time in five years. The number of offenses reported jumped a little more than 9% from 2008 to 2009.

There were 7,538 offenses reported in 2009 compared with 6,900 in 2008. The previous years, 2007 and 2008, showed a 6.4% drop, and there was a 12.5% decrease between 2006 and 2007. TBI contacted the institutions that showed the greatest increases and asked for explanations regarding the increase reported offenses for the most recent analysis. Enrollment increased 10% statewide from 2008 to 2009 possibly due to economic conditions in the state and people improving their job skills with education.

Here are some key findings from the report:

  1. Larceny/Theft offenses made up 38.5% of the total number of offenses reported. This category continues to comprise the largest number of crimes on campuses.
  2. Drugs/Narcotics violations increased 16% overall with Drug Paraphernalia increasing 18%.
  3. Fraud offenses increased by 75% and shoplifting increased 700% in 2009.
  4. The reported number of rapes increased from 12 in 2008 to 17 in 2009.
