DALTON, GA (WRCB)-- Whitfield County Superintendent Katie Brochu is leaving after five years on the job.  Brochu, 50, has been selected as the new superintendent by the Richland Two (South Carolina) School District, in the Columbia area.  She is expected to sign a contract which runs through 2014.

Mrs. Brochu has been widely praised by her Board members in Whitfield County for introducing progressive programs during her tenure.  Although some teachers were critical of what they called expensive travel and program costs, Board members were almost always unanimous in their support for the superintendent.

She has said she did not seek out the South Carolina job, but was recruited by Richland 2 School District leaders.  South Carolina media reports say she will be paid an annual salary of $215,000.

Mrs. Brochu came to Whitfield County in 2005 from York, South Carolina.  There were reportedly some one hundred candidates for the Richland job, and Mrs. Brochu was among three finalists interviewed last week.  At the time Whitfield Board Chairman Tim Trew said it was understandable why Mrs. Brochu was in demand, and that the Board would seek a qualified replacement to carry on progress in the school district if she was hired in Richland.
