Chattanooga Police Chief Cooper to Retire

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) --  Chattanooga Police Chief Freeman Cooper plans to retire in the near future.  He will outline his plans Tuesday at a regularly-scheduled city council meeting.

But Mayor Ron Littlefield says he wants the chief to continue to work under contract until the mayor's tenure expires in three years.

The city council must approve the measure before it goes into effect.  Mayor Littlefield says the move will not cost the taxpayers any more money.

Mayor Littlefield says, "There's always a double dipping question but the taxpayers aren't paying his retirement, that's money he put into his retirement fund."

Cooper's contract work will be discussed Tuesday during a council meeting at 3:00.
