CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Hamilton County Jail corrections officers will soon have a new way to control inmates.

Thursday the County Commission voted approve the purchase of 10 new stun guns equipped with cameras.

Five corrections officers are currently recovering from injures they received from confrontations with inmates inside the Hamilton County jail.

Currently corrections officers are not allowed to carry guns inside the jail.

In fact the only tool they use to get inmates to comply is mace.

Until now.

Richard Shockley says, "'I have seen a lot of my officers getting hurt in confrontations with inmates both the new coming in through intake and booking and those already in the facility that for one reason or another decided they want to act out.""

Only supervisors will be getting the tasers. And training will be completed before the guns are distributed.
