First Baby Of 2010 Is Actually Twins

Chattanooga (WRCB)-- Erlanger welcomed the arrival of the first two babies born in 2010 and staff members wonder if it's a "once in a blue moon" coincidence.

Kandice and Rick Powell of Jasper, GA. welcomed their twin baby girls into the world at 10:27 and 10:28 a.m.  Carson Marie Faye is 17 ¾ inches long and weighs 4 lbs and 2 ½ oz and Claire Madeline is 18 ½ inches long and weighs 4 lbs and 11 oz.  Both mom and babies are doing well.

There are now five living generations on the maternal side of the family.  In one of the photos you will see from left to right Phyllis Jones, great grandmother; Tina Kuykendall, grandmother and Kandice Powell, mother.  The great great grandmother did not attend the media event and the twins(see attached photos).  , Carson and Claire, are in the NICU at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital.  The names of the babies where chosen to honor other family members such as a great great great grandmother on the mother's side and a grandfather and a step mother on the father's side.

When asked what the he thought about having twins, Rick said "I thought one baby was a blessing, so double the blessing, double the better."  Kandice and Rick are looking forward to starting the new year with the new additions to their family and watching the girls grow.
