SOUTH PITTSBURG (WRCB) -- The South Pittsburg Pirates lost their bid to win another state high school football title.
At the half at the Blue Cross Bowl, the Pirates were leading the Union City Golden Tornadoes 14-7. The key apparently at that point in the game was the passing... South Pittsburg had 119 yards passing while Union City has none.
But Union City came back in the second half with an impressive running game. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was 21-21.
Early in the 4th quarter, Union City took the lead 28-21. Then with four minutes left, South Pittsburg scored a touchdown then made a two point conversion to go ahead 29-28. But Union City made a last second field goal to win the game 31-29.
Channel 3 Eyewitness Sports and the Friday Night Football team made the trip to Cookeville to offer the only local coverage of the championship game.
Congratulations Pirates on a great season! Thanks for letting Channel 3 be there for the ride.
