Rev. Overstreet Arrested

Posted: Updated:

The main witness in the case against former Hamilton County sheriff Billy Long has been arrested.

Authorities took Reverend Eugene Overstreet into custody Wednesday. Janice Atkinson with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department says Overstreet for violation of probation resulting from bad check charges. Members of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department Fugitive Division arrested Overstreet in East Brainerd and brought him to the Hamilton County Jail.

Just this week, attorneys for Billy Long filed a 60-plus page affidavit in federal court, detailing bad check charges previously brought against Overstreet. On Wednesday, Overstreet was arrested for failing to provide a DNA sample and not making restitution as ordered by Hamilton County Criminal Court. To see the affidavit, click on the link on the left side of this page.

Overstreet was the main witness in the investigation of Billy Long. That resulted in his arrest in February on federal corruption charges. Long resigned as sheriff then pleaded guilty. Since that time, his attorneys have introduced evidence they claim backs up their belief that Overstreet was manipulative and could not be trusted. They say based on this proof Long's sentence should be reduced.
