FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - After 32 years, Patricia Bonney believes she may find out who killed her son, Kirk Bonney. He was a young soldier at Fort Benning who was found shot to death at Fort Benning in 1978.
The 80-year-old Patricia Bonney told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer newspaper a criminal investigation agent on post told her they have identified the person who fired the .38-caliber revolver and that DNA evidence is being tested. Her 20-year-old son was shot in the chest a day before he was to complete airborne training at Fort Benning.
Kirk Bonney had served just six months in the Army. Since then, his mother has pushed for authorities to find the person who ended her son's life.
An agent in the Criminal Investigation Command office confirmed the investigation was going on, but would not release more information.
