CSAS Parents Make Themselves Heard

Chattanooga (WRCB) - Some Hamilton County parents are anticipating what the new school year will bring after dozens of staff cuts made within the school system.

Monday night about 200 parents gathered at the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences to discusses changes they wanted to see for the upcoming school year.

Parents said they have some serious concerns.  Security is among the chief concerns.  There are 18 points of entry into the school and parents say the doors are frequently unlocked.  The school does not have an SRO, the position was cut a couple of years ago.

Another hot topic, the cutting of a middle school assistant principal position.  Jim Boles formerly held that position, but his position at CSAS was one of 25 assistant principal positions cut during the budget crunch.

Parents told James Colbert, Area Superintendent and Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey they wanted to see Jim Boles back in the school. Colbert announced to applause Monday night that the middle school assistant principal's position had been restored at CSAS. As far as who will take that possition, Colbert said it would not be filled until the high school/middle school principal is hired.

Mackey pledged to buy the school 3 promethean boards from his commission fund.
