Free Legal Services for Chattanoogans Saturday

Update: Saturday 6 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - "The clinic didn't start until 10, and we had people here at 8:30, signing up, ready to go," said Judge Jeff Hollingsworth, Hamilton County Circuit Court.

They came armed with paperwork and questions, and it's no surprise some showed up an hour early. They're in search of legal advice, and it doesn't cost a dime.

"It's an opportunity for the legal community to give back to all the citizens of Tennessee," said Nancy Pagano, Legal Aid of East Tennessee.

About 50 attorneys and two local judges were on hand at the Brainerd Recreation Center to answer questions and offer advice on any non-criminal matters.

"The problem is with the segment who makes too much money to get pro-bono services but who can't afford to hire an attorney, that's where this fits in," said Craig Smith, Miller and Martin.

The clinic is part of a state-wide public service effort called Justice 4All. It's organized by the State Bar Association and designed to help folks who can't afford a lawyer.

"I'd like everyone in Chattanooga to realize our attorneys are very kind and giving," said Pagano. "It's been a great day, and we hope to do it annually."

The attorneys volunteered their time Saturday. The clinic was open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and helped about 100 people in that time.
