Does Detox Work?

Posted: Updated:

(NBC/WRCB) - Independent Centers For Science looked at a range of products using the word 'detox' From cleanses and food supplements to patches. They found many of their claims to be meaningless.

"There really isn't any scientific meaning to the word detox," said Dr. Daniella Muallem, a Scientist. "Each product has a different definition in fact when we contacted them. They didn't even know themselves what they meant by detox, and then the claims that they made none of the products were able to provide evidence that these claims are true."

The body they say is perfectly capable of cleansing itself, and all you need to feel better is a glass of water and a good night's sleep.  The detox industry though is worth tens of millions of dollars, and manufacturers say their products do help.

The simple message from this study is not to feel bad about Christmas excess, but simply to reign it in slightly now.

While some experts say detox helps improve your immune system and promote healthy eating, there can be side effects such as headaches, fever and chills.  Be sure and check with your doctor or local experts at area vitamin and nutritional supplement stores.
