House Fire Leaves Family Homeless

Posted: Updated:

An early morning house fire left six people homeless.  The flames broke out at 1am Thursday in the 4200 block of Wilkesview Drive.

Four adults and two children all got out of the house safely. Firefighters arrived to find most of the house was engulfed in flames.  They eventually got the blaze under control, but the fire damage was substantial with the dollar loss estimated at $45,000.

Lieutenant Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said a mentally disabled woman started the fire when she burned paper in an ashtray. The flames spread to some window curtains and blinds.  Lt. McElvain said the cause of the fire was unintentional and no charges will be filed.

The family was renting the house but did not have renter's insurance.  Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the family.
