Chattanooga, TN (WRCB-TV) -
The days of name-brand grocery shopping are gone, instead its all about finding the best bargain in town.
"Everyone has been hit with gas prices," says Kate Raiford with Angel Food Ministries, "and by the economy, and by the closings of major businesses around here."
A dozen churches, including North Shore Fellowship, are hoping they can put the power back in the hands of cash-strapped families by serving "food from heaven".
Its called Angel Food Ministries, it provides a week's supply of food for a family of four for just $30.
We took this month's menu to a local grocery store to compare that price, and found its a bargain that is hard to beat. The Angel Food Ministry provides 17 items, and just the meat alone would cost more than $46 on sale at your local grocer.
Perhaps the most convenient thing about Angel Food Ministries is that its open to anyone. There are no qualifications to meet and no application process. For that reason, the program is growing by leaps and bounds, helping families of all kinds through tough times.
"We see elderly people who are living off food stamps," says Raiford, "people who have just lost their jobs and have children or families, we even have college students."
It's a ministry that has been around for nearly two decades, but its only now that many are choosing to take advantage of it.
This year, Angel Food Ministries is stretching its wings to help families on Thanksgiving. The organization will provide an entire meal for only 30 dollars.
