Chattanooga, TN (WRCB) - The water wars are heating up for one local company on the heels of a proposed rate increase.
Today the "Fight the Hike" coalition spoke out about Tennessee-American Water Company's plan to raise water rates by more than 20 percent.
The proposal comes just a little over a year after rates were increased by 12 percent.
The coalition believes higher prices will amount to less interest in the city of Chattanooga among businesses, and hurt customers who are feeling the pinch from other soaring costs. The group also questions the equation used to determine rates and how the company is spending its funds.
"It is difficult for us to sit back and remain silent," said Fight the Hike Chair Randy Baker,"with this type of rate increase."
Tennessee-American President John Watson says the price of water is still relatively cheap in comparison to other utilities, and the increase is necessary to maintain operating costs.
A public hearing is set for the August 18th before the Tennessee Regulatory Authority makes a decision on whether or not the increase will happen.
