Politicians React to Death of Russert

Posted: Updated:

"I don't think anyone, regardless of where they stand politically, did not have respect for Tim Russert," said Congressman Zach Wamp.  He remembers fondly
his first appearance on Meet the Press.  It was the last day of 1995 and he was a freshman from Tennessee's 3rd District.

As word of Russert's untimely passing spread Friday, other local politicians added their sympathies and their accolades.  "He's our best known political reporter," said Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander, "and he earned that by being well prepared, tough and fair and having a great sense of humor.  So, we'll all miss him."

Tennessee Senator Bob Corker released a statement which read, "Tim was an institution in Washington and television journalism and neither will be the same with his passing."

Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss added, "To say that Tim Russert was the best of the best is an understatement.  He was a brilliant journalist, he did his homework, and you knew going into an interview with him that he'd leave no stone unturned."

For journalists and lawmakers, the tributes may seem a bit self-serving if Russert had not so completely transcended network and party affiliation.  His curiosity, his intellect and his voice of moderation will be missed.

"He's the model of how you should do your research, your homework, your diligence and then be fair and reasonable about it all," said Wamp.

Tim Russert was the longest running host of Meet the Press, having held court Sunday mornings on NBC since 1991.
