Eyewitness News has obtained surveillance video that will make animal lovers ill: unbelievable cases of animal cruelty in Whitfield County.
A few weeks ago, a Dalton woman found seven puppies, just hours old and still with their umbilical cords attached, in a dumpster outside her apartment.
Now, further inhumane acts are showing up at the shelter, with officials there pulling out all the stops to try and put an end to animal cruelty in Whitfield County. Despite security cameras and a sign that clearly 'spells it out,' the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia is appalled by what has been happening. Dogs that are often in poor health are being chained to fences with little hope of survival.
"They've been sick, starving. Wire around their neck," said a Humane Society volunteer. "Not a pleasant thing to come to when we're volunteering here. Very depressing."
"If we can backtrack it up and identify the individuals that are responsible for this type of act, certainly there will be prosecution in the making," said a spokesperson for the Humane Society.
Other than the obvious inhumane act of chaining a dog to a fence, dogs end up at the Humane Society with serious diseases like parvo and distemper. Once those diseases are transferred to the healthy dogs, chances of survival, especially for puppies, are slim to none.
Around 4,000 dogs are put down in Whitfield County eachyear, and leaving a sick dog at the shelter will not help in that effort. The Humane Society says more surveillance cameras will be installed, and you can expect more arrests, fines and convictions by the sheriff's department, which continues to crack down on animal cruelty.
