Local volunteer takes first trip to DC; honored for his service

WASHINGTON, DC (WRCB) - Local radio DJ Keith Landecker is in Washington, DC to be honored as Chattanooga's 2011 Jefferson Award winner. Channel 3 Eyewitness News has a crew with Landecker in Washington for his well-deserved honor.

Landecker created a local baseball league to keep teenagers busy and out of trouble. From the baseball fields of Chattanooga to the streets of Washington, D.C., Landecker represented the Scenic City Tuesday.

When his mission began 8 years ago, Keith Landecker never dreamed it would lead him to the Capitol.

"We just wanted some dirt because when the kids slid they said it hurt. So we went from dirt to the Capitol. Here we are in Washington," said Landecker.

His grass roots baseball league for boys 12 and older continues to grow.

Not only is he keeping teens in school and out of trouble, he's teaching them to be leaders. It is all on his own dime.

As the voice of afternoons on Power 94, Keith works so his team can play. And now he's being recognized in Washington.

"Eight years of working with young people and teaching them skills, self esteem with baseball, he deserves the award," Sen. Lamar Alexander told Channel 3.

According to Sen. Bob Corker, "I just don't see a community in America that has the heart and soul, or has one that is more amplified than Chattanooga, Tennessee."

Representing that volunteer spirit, on his first trip to Washington, Keith says his mission isn't about winning an award.

"We've already won. We started the Tennessee Express. The boys have gotten so much exposure. We've had an opportunities to fulfill some dreams," he said.

The Jefferson Awards have been honoring community leaders across the country since 1972.
