FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - Six elementary schools and a middle school at Fort Benning will close for up to five days in September because of teacher furloughs. The furloughs will affect some 11,000 educators working in the nine-month category throughout the department.

LULA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in Hall County are seeking a woman they say shot another woman during a robbery at a pottery store at Lula near Gainesville. A spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff's Office says the victim is a 59-year-old employee of the shop who suffered a gunshot wound yesterday that doesn't appear to be life-threatening.

CANTON, Ga. (AP) - Fire department officials say a 5-year-old boy playing with a lighter started a fire in his grandmother's Cherokee County home. A Cherokee County fire department spokesman says firefighters were called to the home in Canton just after 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. They found heavy smoke coming from the two-story home.

CANTON, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia National Cemetery is gearing up to honor all military members who have served the country or are currently deployed. The Memorial Day program is scheduled for tomorrow at the cemetery in Canton - about 45 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
