DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis has been indicted. A county grand jury filed charges including attempted extortion, conspiracy and theft. Prosecutors say he threatened to withhold county business from companies that didn't contribute to his campaign. Authorities had raided Ellis' Stone Mountain home in January.

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police say a 75-year-old woman was stabbed to death and a 71-year-old man was wounded in a knife attack at an Atlanta assisted living facility. Both victims were residents there. So was the man arrested in the attack. Police spokesman John Chafee identified the suspect as Geary Otis.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) - A Woodstock police officer has been placed on paid leave after a police dog was left in his car and died of a heat stroke. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports 3-year-old Spartacus, a Belgian malinois, was found dead inside the unidentified officer's patrol car Monday at his home in Pickens County.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A west Georgia inmate has pleaded guilty to using a city employee's cellphone to orchestrate his escape from jail. WTVM-TV reports Michael Crooks yesterday admitted to calling his girlfriend with a city worker's cellphone in early October. Officials say a neighbor called police when they saw Crooks getting into her car.
