SPEEDWELL, Tenn. (AP) - Forecasters have confirmed that an EF-3 tornado touched down last night in the community of Speedwell in Claiborne County. Communities across East Tennessee have been cleaning up after the powerful storms. Authorities say there were no reports of any deaths or injuries.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Republican congressman from Kentucky says his wife did not improperly spur him to introduce a bill concerning the possible abuse of Tennessee Walking Horses. Ed Whitfield says he planned to file the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act regardless of his wife's role with the Humane Society.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Knoxville police officer has fatally shot a 45-year-old man after being attacked. Police say Ronald Carden was shot Sunday after suddenly attacking Officer David Gerlach, who had stopped to help him and another man change a flat tire along I-40. Carden was a prison parolee with a violent past.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Amerisure Insurance -- which provides coverage for contractors -- has given a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, center dedicated to construction safety research $20,000 to continue its work. The center conducts research to reduce injuries and fatalities.
