Local organizations feed the homeless

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - All around the nation shelters and organizations are trying to make sure no one is alone or hungry today. Chattanooga is no different. We spent the day at two local shelters.

"We've got a whole slew of people to make this a special event. No body has to be alone today," said Donald Baer of the Chattanooga Rescue Mission.

Baer is right, no body should be alone today. And they're doing they did their best to make sure, holiday music, open arms, and a hearty meal.

Mary Ellen Holcombe said, "it's a blessing, I enjoy helping them, they're, the rescue mission is my family."

Holcombe has come full circle at the Rescue Mission. Before finding this center she spent holidays alone fighting a pill addiction.

"It changed my life, I know have a job, and own my own home again. To the many people that volunteer here I am so thankful," said Holcombe.

Now she's paying it forward by volunteering this Thanksgiving, all because she knows what it's like to be down and out.

"I came here to help them, but they help me, they give me the privilege to help them, and to not be alone," said Holcombe.

Just a few blocks away, the Community Kitchen offered the same hospitality to the less fortunate. Charlie Hughes said even though they offer food everyday, today is very different.

"Had one gentleman say to a volunteer, thank you for taking time out of your Thanksgiving to be with us, it's lets us know they appreciate it."
