Fire displaces family of 10

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -  A family of ten is without a home after a house fire on 45th Street Thursday night.

The fire started around 7:00 p.m. in the bedroom of the house at 2601 East 45th Street.

Amanda Jenkins says she had walked across the street to the convenience store when she saw smoke coming from the home she shares with her husband and eight children.

Jenkins tells Eyewitness News the window air condition unit in her bedroom was the source of the blaze. She says her husband tried to battle the fire himself, but was unsuccessful.

Through tears Jenkins told us she was afraid she and her family had lost everything inside their home.  But she did add, "That is the bright side, we  are all ok, especially the kids."

Chattanooga Fire was able to extinguish the fire, but not before it did considerable damage to the home.

Jenkins says all eight children, seven dogs and her husband made it out safely, but four kittens died in the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
