CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)--On a dare, a Nashville teenager on a middle school field trip jumped from the top deck of the Southern Belle Riverboat while his friends recorded the stunt on their cell phones.
The 8th grade class of Heritage Middle School in Franklin had just visited the Tennessee Aquarium and enjoying a cruise down the Tennessee River when the child jumped.
At one point, someone dared one of the boys to jump from the top deck of the boat. The incident was recorded by several students and posted on YouTube.
Janelle Cantrell is one of many confused parents wondering where were the teachers who were supposed to be watching the students.
"You always have to be watching them. Always," said Cantrell.
Weston Cantrell, one of the students on the boat who witnessed the incident, said the captain had to make a sharp turn so the student could be rescued from the water.
"He was down awhile before he actually came back up out of the water. No one was sure (if he survived,)" said Cantrell. "He could've died. The teacher said he was about 3 yards from the propeller."
In a written statement released Wednesday, Williamson County school officials said "this kind of conduct is not tolerated," and the boy who jumped from the boat has been disciplined.
