Alpaca Fibers For Gulf Oil Spill

By Antwan Harris

Decatur, TN (WRCB) -- Everyone is doing their part to help with cleanup efforts in the Gulf Coast including Yashan Long. He pulled apart very fine alpaca hairs as part of his job, and as a way to help get relief to Louisiana.

He works for the Alpaca Fiber Coop of North America in Decatur, TN where loads of fibers are being stored.

He says didn't know Alpaca's could make such a difference.

Alpaca fibers, known for it's durability and absorbing qualities, will be turned into large net-like fixtures to work as a sponge to soak the oil out of the water.

It will assist with the high tech drilling rig that is pushing oil off the coast.

Director of Operations Tammy O'Daniels said she is thankful such a small company could have such a large impact.

This is part of a nationwide project.

The Gulf Coast has already seen thousands of fiber donations.
