Boy hiking near Cookeville hurt by falling icicle

Associated Press - January 18, 2010 4:05 AM ET

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A teenage boy is recovering after being hit in the leg by a large icicle that fell from a cliff where he and others were hiking.

Authorities told the Cookeville Herald-Citizen that it took three hours to rescue the youth in a ruggedly steep area in the Austin Bottom area near Center Hill Lake.

Rescue officials said they rappelled down and put a rope harness around him. A helicopter ambulance landed in a farm field nearby and flew the boy to a hospital.

The name of the youth was withheld because he is a juvenile.
