WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - The New Year will start on a sad note for one North Georgia family. Authorities say a man died when a gun accidentally fired.

Andrew Bradfield, 23,  was visiting a friend's home. The two had plans to watch a football game, but decided to take in a little target practice before kick off.

Bradfield was reportedly playing with the gun when it discharged, shooting himself in the head.

When rescue crews arrived, Bradfield was already dead.

Sheriff Scott Chitwood says Bradfield's death came as a complete shock to Bradfield's friend.

"They felt like it was unloaded," said Chitwood, "but obviously there was one in the chamber, or one still there, that's why it was such a shock that is this incident occurred."

Sheriff Chitwood says nothing on the scene indicated that Bradfield was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he died.

The department is still waiting on toxicology results.

Bradfield's arrangements will be handled by Peeples Funeral Home in Dalton.
