4-Year-Old Removed From Home after Drinking Beer, Stealing Gifts

UPDATED DECEMBER 17th 6 PM

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - The Department of Child Services has stepped in after a four year-old drank beer and stole presents.

Logan Pugh awoke to sheriff's deputies looking for his four year-old neighbor Monday night, and discovered his Christmas tree had been robbed of packages.

A dress, once wrapped under the tree, was found down the street. The missing four year-old boy was wearing the dress, and the child had an empty beer can in his hand when deputies found him.

The incident is now under investigation and the child has been removed from his home.

DCS says a case like this raises a lot of questions.

"In any situation like that we are concerned about drug exposure, adult supervision," said Lori Harris Hammond, "and about what that child is learning, or not learning."

The case has been handed over to the criminal investigators.

So far no charges have been filed, but until the investigation is complete the little boy will not return to the home.

UPDATED DECEMBER 16th 9:38 PM

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - "I don't know how a four year old could think of this," said Logan Pugh.

Pugh was sleeping inside a friend's home on Blue Spruce Drive on Monday night, little did he know,  he wasn't the only guest.

"He got in and out of the house without waking anybody up," Pugh told Eyewitness News.

Pugh slept soundly until deputies with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office knocked on the door looking for a missing four year old boy.

"They found him at the end of the street drinking a beer, walking around like it was nothing," Pugh remembered.

It wasn't until the deputies left and the scene cleared away that Pugh realized the little boy had come in the unlocked door and taken all of the presents from underneath the Christmas tree.

Under the tree were items of clothing including a girl's dress, which the little boy was wearing when deputies found him.

"Ended up finding all of the presents in his house hidden.  I don't know what he was thinking," Pugh said of the boy.

The boy made it home safe and sound, but Pugh wonders what could have happened to him.

"He could have come in and found something that could have hurt him," he said.

It's not clear at this time if charges will be filed in the case.

The incident happened in Middle Valley overnight Monday.

The boy was taken to a local hospital as a precaution but was not injured. As we reported Wednesday at 6:00, the deputies who responded have turned the report over to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

We spoke with the neighbors who found the boy opening their gifts. That part of the story is tonight at 11:00, right after Sing-Off and the Jay Leno Show.
