AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - An Augusta man will serve 10 years in prison after he caused a crash that left a baby seriously injured.
Dexter J. Thomas pleaded guilty Tuesday in Richmond County Superior Court to serious injury by vehicle and driving with excessive blood alcohol concentration. Police said his blood alcohol level was .213 after the June 7 crash, more than twice the legal limit in Georgia.
The 53-year-old Thomas apologized to Tiasha Houston, the young mother whose vehicle he rear-ended. The accident left Houston's 3-month-old son, Kadin, with a fractured skull, a broken leg and seizures.
Thomas had a criminal record that included a DUI conviction in 1986 and two violations for driving on a revoked license.
Thomas must also pay $80,000 to Houston for the baby's medical bills and perform 500 hours of community service.
