Visitor says he was held, beaten at UGA frat house

Associated Press - November 18, 2009 8:44 PM ET

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - University of Georgia police are investigating a visiting student's claim that he was held captive and beaten in the basement of a fraternity house.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports Wednesday that the 18-year-old Clemson University student ran into the street outside the Chi Phi fraternity and flagged down officers around 3:20 Sunday morning.

The officer who found the student reported he was crying, very drunk, and incoherent but also was cut and bruised, and his clothes were wet and dirty.

The student told police he was in a fight at a bar downtown, then was held against his will in the Chi Phi fraternity's basement and physically assaulted.

UGA police Chief Jimmy Williamson said the victim's recollections are "a little fuzzy" but the allegations are credible.

Williamson wouldn't say how the student got to the fraternity, which is a short walk from the bar.
