CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Nearly two weeks after the Fort Hood shooting that claimed the lives of 13 soldiers, bodies of the fallen are being returned to their families. Officials are still looking for answers as to why Major Nidal Hasan opened fire.
Dr. Harold Jackson, a local counselor for the Department of Veterans affairs, was in Fort Hood talking with soldiers and says one told him he may have been the fourteenth person killed if he didn't use instincts.
"He turned and started firing at him, and he dropped to the ground and said, 'I don't know why he missed me,'" said Jackson.
After returning, Jackson reflects on what he says no one could ever prepared for. A war veteran himself, he says most soldiers he talked to just needed an ear to listen.
"They said, 'thank you for being here,' and 'I just needed to talk about it,'" said Jackson.
The army is still searching for a motive in the shooting. Formal charges have been filed. A conviction could bring the death penalty.
