ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) - A judge in McMinn County has postponed the trial of two men charged in the fatal shooting of a business owner who had been staying nights at the business to ward off burglars.
Judge Carroll Ross delayed to Feb. 8 the murder trial of the two men accused in the Jan. 29 fatal shooting of Plastic Industries president Jeff Beene.
The Daily Post-Athenian reported that the trial of 30-year-old Daniel Lankey and 49-year-old Jeff Coleman was scheduled to start Tuesday.
Beene had called police to inform them he had caught someone breaking in. When officers arrived, Beene had been shot in the head. He died two days later.
Investigators said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation tests on a pistol Lankey threw out during a chase that led to his capture show it is the murder weapon.
