TRION, Ga. (WRCB) -- 17 counties across Georgia are still trying to rebuild all that was lost by the flooding. FEMA started canvassing the areas as soon as they could make their way into the counties now specialists are trying to give families a new beginning.
One resident we spoke with says she lost most of her possessions in the flood that took her a lifetime to get and she had registered with FEMA and while they say they can't replace everything, it's a start.
"You don't know what to do so you're just sorta moving along trying to do the best you can," said Jimmie Woodard.
It's tough knowing Woodard won't be able to live in her apartment for months.
"What's so devastating that was your home and as you've seen it looks nothing like my home it's totally gone," said Woodard.
Her cabinets have been yanked off the wall, furniture is still scattered across the place, and she worries about her floors collapsing.
"It's hard just to go through and see what's there and you want to hang onto it but you can't, it's got to go everything down there has got to go," said Woodard.
But a glimmer of hope keeps her going monday she registered with FEMA Disaster Assistance.
"They responded, I heard from them yesterday and they've been out here this morning," said Woodard.
"It's very hard when you see this kind of devastation and people have lost everything that they had for 20 or 30 years," said Robert Munoz, FEMA CR Specialist.
Robert Munoz and Martha Peers with FEMA are canvassing Chattooga County, helping more than 300 families.
"Our assistance is to get the people back to not to where they were before but at least give them a start to where they before," said Munoz.
"Nothing will bring back what I've lost, you know I'll just have to replace and move forward," said Woodard.
FEMA is visiting 17 different counties in Georgia, including Chattooga, Catoosa, and Walker. They'll be here as long as residents need their help.
