CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Preliminary figures from the Tennessee Department of Safety show eight people were killed in traffic crashes on Tennessee roadways during the 78-hour Fourth of July holiday period. There were 11 fatalities during the same weekend last year.
"While these numbers are still preliminary, we are continuing to see a decline in the number of fatalities during holiday weekends and throughout the year," said Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell.
The holiday weekend began 6 p.m. Thursday and ran through midnight Sunday. There were eight fatal crashes that resulted in eight fatalities. Six of the people killed were vehicle occupants. One motorcyclist was killed, and one pedestrian was killed. Four of the people killed were not wearing seat belts.
Only two of the fatalities were alcohol related, compared to three alcohol-related fatalities last year.
In Georgia 19 people were killed during the holiday weekend, which was three less than predicted.
