BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts father now accused of beating his 7-year-old son into a coma had earlier begged a judge for visitation, saying he wanted to be more than a child support check to his son.
Nathaniel Turner was declared clinically dead Tuesday after a Father's Day beating, allegedly by his father, Leslie Schuler.
Court records show that Schuler, of Worcester, asked a judge last year for visitation rights, saying he had not been given the opportunity to meet his son and build a relationship.
A judge never ruled on his request and court officials say they have no record of a custody order.
But relatives said his grandmother was told Schuler had an order giving him custody of the boy for the summer. He had been living with his grandmother in Eufaula, Ala.
