Riley promoting services for Alabama's unemployed

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley and state Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees surprised unemployed workers filling out job applications when the two officials visited the state Career Center in Montgomery.

On his visit Thursday, Riley said they wanted to emphasize the variety of services available at the 44 Career Centers throughout Alabama.

The services include preparing a resume and posting it on a state Web site, signing up for unemployment benefits, lining up job training paid for with federal stimulus funds, and getting preparation to take the GED exam.

Alabama's unemployment rate in March was 9%, which was the highest figurte in more than 22 years. The April rate will be announced Friday.
